The concept of CHOOPERS ( CHeney + HOOPER)
Was born on a Saturday afternoon in August 2009 on the Pemaquid Beach in New
Harbor, Maine. Two guys who had in their former lives collectively been in over 45
Substance Abuse Treatment Centers for alcoholism and addiction decided that too many
addicts and alcoholics die because they can't find a bed in area rehab clinics or can't find
the right type of rehab and also that too many clinicians, medical personnel and other
referrers make inappropriate treatment referrals or no referrals due to lack of easily
accessible information resources. We decided to build a resource guide focused on
substance abuse treatment centers. We named it CHOOPERS Guide. We think it has a
nice ring and that it is easy to remember.
We scoured the web and discovered several sites that provided the service but found
them to be incomplete, the data was not uniform, the sites were too busy, they were
too expensive to the advertising provider and not easily navigable to the user. We
decided that it was time to invoke the tried and true aphorism "keep it simple" and set
out to design a site that is comprehensive, clean (free of clutter) and simple enough that
a sick addict or alcoholic or an anxious family member could successfully work with it to
find rehab clinics..
As this is the first release of this product, we may have overlooked something which you
